The Word of the Day Is Practice!

Practice. We all know the old saying,"practice makes perfect."  The question is, do you believe it?  Will practice really give you the result you want?

I don't remember, as an older adult, when I have really put the time in to getting "better" at something.  Allen Iverson (funny video) didn't seem to think that practice is important, but I have recently "seen the light."

I wanted to be able to do "real" pull-ups. I was tired of doing the jumping pull-ups and decided that with my one-year Crossfit anniversary coming up, it was time to ramp it up and get serious. So, starting in July, I practiced every day. And I am still practicing.

The good news is that I now can do kipping pull-ups. They are not pretty and it is still a work in progress, but I can do a pull-up.

The moral of the story? That practicing our weaknesses does make us better. It may not be much fun, but in the end it is much more rewarding than doing something that comes easier to us!

Once a week at CFNE they are scheduling a "goat" day -- a workout involving movements that we aren't good at. OK, that we suck at.  For me, it is double-unders. I cannot do them. For someone who has been fairly athletic her whole life, this is exceedingly frustrating. I can justify not being able to lift heavy weights, but this is something a 5-year-old can do, right?  My 13-year-old and my 11-year-old can do them (a fact that they both like to show me as often as possible) So, every day I will practice and hope that someday it will click.

  1. Karen, awesome article. I like how CFNE has incorporated that into their programming, very suitable for any athlete. Weaknesses are like cracks in dam, once they start and aren't addressed, everything can be washed away quickly.

Can I use that as my quote? Sick, lol!

If you don't mind, I also shot a shoutout on facebook for ya, hope that traffic increases!!

  2. Your practice definitely paid off...you were my hero yesterday doing those pullups during the wod!

I am going to follow in your footsteps and get my first pullup by January 1...thanks for the inspiration!
