Robb Wolf Reiterates "Say No to Protein Powder"

I have noticed that one of the most searched posts has been the Robb Wolf post about protein powders and why they are not the best choice for post workout nutrition. In the following article Wolf reiterates that REAL FOOD is always the best choice.

"There seems to have been a ‘bit’ of resistance to my recent post about the use of protein powders and liquid nutrition.  If you missed that whole show let me give you a quick recap.  Amy said: “Real food is always the best option and protein powders aren’t necessary.”  This kind of ‘crazy talk’ brought out every shaker bottle owner, supplement junkie and powder pusher in cyber world.  As Robb so eloquently put it – I “kicked their puppies”.  Now, I’m going to warn you right off – this post is not going to tell you that I changed my mind on the subject – nope, no endorsements here…
One of the MAJOR hang-ups that many readers had was; “real food isn’t convenient”.  Okay, I agree it takes a little more thought to put together a ‘real food’ post workout meal; but I assure you it isn’t going to take HOURS, it’s definitely not rocket science and you can do it!  I have clients that travel, have kids, work full time, are constantly on the go and guess what?  They are 100% powder free!!  I kid you not – and you know what else?  They are seeing results, recovering awesomely, and they aren’t complaining about the lack of convenience either.  I’m telling you – it can be done!!  Yes, you may have to turn the TV off 10-15 minutes earlier than usual and pick up a few extra things at the grocery store, but ultimately your body is going to thank you.  Now, I’m not telling you that you HAVE to ditch your shaker bottle – I mean if you are REALLY that attached to it – have at it.  Your ‘relationships’ are your choice and I’m not going to judge you.  However, if you aren’t getting the results you think you should – don’t complain until you’ve ended your affair with the scoop and powder.
Okay, back to the task at hand.  I’m going to help you all out and make this ‘transition’ a little less bumpy.  Now this is not a post telling you what your post workout meal should look like.  Remember, the composition (carbs, protein, fat) will depend on YOUR goals, needs, activity, and health.  There is no ‘one size fits all’.  This is a post to give you some CONVENIENT, throw in your gym bag or in a container in the fridge, ideas for quick post workout meals that don’t require a shaker bottle.
Protein Options:
  • Packets or easy-open cans of water-packed tuna, salmon and/or sardines
  • Hard boiled eggs
  • Pre-cooked steak or chicken sliced into easy to eat strips
  • Mini paleo meatloaves (make your meatloaf in muffin pans)
  • Jerky (get the good stuff – Slim Jim’s are NOT the ‘good stuff’)
  • Pre-cooked frozen shrimp (just run them under water to thaw and they’re ready to eat!)
Carbohydrate Options: (consider your goals here!!!!)
  • Pre-cooked sweet potatoes (baked, roasted, etc) – these are even good cold!!
  • Packets of baby food sweet potatoes and/or squash blends (there are lots of them out there!!!)
  • Cans of sweet potatoes, squash and/or pumpkin (unsweetened)
  • Fresh fruit (this is not the best choice – but can work in a pinch!)
Fat Options: (again, consider your goals!!!!)
  • Unsweetened Coconut chips/flakes
  • Raw coconut meat
  • Medium Chain Triglyceride oil (MCT oil)
  • Nuts and/or olives (not the best choices – but can work in a pinch)
There are some quick, convenient options for you to play with.  Will it require a little prep and thought?  Yeah, a little – but once you start ‘chewing it’ you won’t look back and during the transition we’ll all be here to support you.  You can ‘chew’ it!!!
Are you ready to ‘break-up’ with your shaker bottle?"

How Many Carbohydrates Are Too Many Carbohydrates??? Fruit, Rice,Sweet Potatoes, etc????

Great Post on Robb Wolf's site discussing women, carbohydrates, and our hormones. It is definitely worth a look if you are experiencing lost cycles, poor recovery, difficulty losing body fat, etc...

an exerpt:
"When you may need more:

  • If you are active, especially with a focus on frequent, high-intensity based workouts
  • If you start having trouble recovering from your workouts
  • If your thyroid is underactive, even with a clean diet and support from medications
  • If you have adrenal fatigue
  • If you start to lose your period or have irregular cycles (pre-menopause)
  • If you’ve been very low carb for an extended period of time
  • During pregnancy and while breastfeeding

When you may need less:
  • If you have a condition such as PCOS, fibroids or endometriosis
  • If you are dealing with small intestine bacterial or yeast overgrowth
  • If you are insulin resistant or have diabetes
  • If you have a neurodegenerative disease
  • If you have certain forms of cancer

The aticle ends with this summary:
"In summary:
  • Lower is not always better when it comes to carbohydrates for females.
  • Experimentation and individualizing your diet to your specific needs is key!
  • If you’re a female and you’ve been doing very low carb for an extended period of time, you may find benefit with the health of your thyroid, adrenals, liver, and ovaries by bumping them up a bit.
  • Carb cycling may be a great tool if you’re not ready for a daily increase in carbs.
  • Changes in your cycle may not be related to exercise intensity or body fatness per se, but to inadequate energy intake (including carbohydrates levels) to meet the demands of the exercise.
  • Sleep, toxins, stress levels (both physiologic and psychological), and the health of your thyroid (which can also be negatively affected by a lower carb approach), among a multitude of other factors also play a role in regulating your hormones, so make sure to work with a practitioner to get these things sorted out instead of covering the symptoms with medications and upping your carbohydrate intake alone."

Egg Protein,Whey Protein, No Protein,Real Food......

What's an exerciser to do???????????????
protein shake in plastic shaker ...
If you Google protein powders you will get as many types of protein powders as you will get opinions as to what you should drink/eat after a workout.
Robb Wolf recommends only eating REAL food after a workout:
meat and dairy products in the...

But, there are others who can only stomach drinking their protein after a workout and these people then have to decide Whey or Egg? (there are others out there, hemp, soy, rice, etc. but for this discussion I will stick with the two most popular options)
five plastic measuring cups of...

Loren Cordain , ("an American scientist who specializes in fields of nutrition and exercise physiology. He is notable as an advocate of the paleolithic diet and a researcher into paleolithic nutrition; he wrote numerous peer-reviewed articles on the subject, as well as several popular books, most notably, The Paleo Diet") recommends an egg protein powder. He feels that it is more "paleo" than the whey.

So, what are some of the other considerations when trying to decide which powder to go with?

When measuring protein quality, there are two main considerations. These are digestibility and bioavailability. Digestibility is the measure of the efficiency of both digestion and absorption by the body. If the body cannot absorb a certain type of protein, it would not be beneficial to an athlete. The bioavailability of the type of protein is measured by the level of protein that is retained when it is absorbed to use by the muscles and the tissues. While both egg and whey proteins are easily digestible, the egg protein has a slightly lower bioavailability. This means that the egg protein is digested more slowly than whey protein and this can be beneficial for the body since absorbing too much at one time is a strain on the body's system.
Another advantage of egg proteins are that they are fat free and contain a large amount of the amino acid leucine. Studies have shown that when athletes work out strenuously, they are at a risk for losing muscle mass as well as fat. However, by maintaining high levels of leucine in the diet, muscle tissue is retained and the body will break down fat tissue instead for fuel. While whey protein has all nine essential amino acids, it does not have the high level of leucine that egg proteins contain.

Allergies are also a consideration when choosing a protein. For anyone who has an egg allergy, egg protein supplements will not be an option. Also, for individuals who are lactose intolerant, whey protein supplements will also be problematic. When taking any type of protein powder, be careful if allergies are a factor.

Another benefit of egg protein powder is that many people who are not allergic to lactose, may still suffer some discomfort from whey protein supplementation. This can be because whey is derived from dairy products and can have some gastrointestinal side effects. If this occurs, switching to egg protein may be an easy solution.
One final benefit of egg protein powder is that it is low in cholesterol. While eggs are high in cholesterol, egg proteins are derived from the egg whites which are cholesterol free.

So now that you are totally confused I will list some other articles which give pros and cons of whey over egg or visa versa.

"Paleo Diet: How do I convince someone to try it?"

Another great post from Robb Wolf !!
It served as a good reminder to me that only some people will be willing to listen to how I eat and how much better I have felt due to the changes I have made in my diet. All you can do is give your friends and loved ones suggestions and serve as a good example, you cannot make someone change. (even if it is better for them)
The Paleo Solution and 30 Day Total Transformation
Robb Wolf-Paleo Diet

Some excerpts:

"…I love helping people, I want desperately to get this information out to folks and see them thrive and live a long, productive life. But I will not waste my time on someone unwilling to change. That one person, that one roadblock…the know-it-all who prefers sickness to change is wasting my time and that means the person who WOULD change may not get the message in time.

And let’s be crystal-f..king-clear about the onerous task I am asking of folks to save their own skins:

Try it.
For 30 days.
Tell me what happened.
That’s it. 30 days, and we will know if it “Did or did Not.”

SOME KEYS TO SUCCESSFULLY TRANSITIONING TO A MORE PALEO LIFESTYLE

"7 Steps to Success"

"The program that I laid out in my book is pretty solid and it was born of observing people both succeed and fail in the attempt to change their lives. Here are the broad brush-strokes of what you need to do to change:
1-Clean out the entire house. All the crap get’s bagged up and donated to charity. The crap you are trying to justify saving for the kids will undermine your efforts, follow the program.
2-Go shopping. Use my shopping and food guide and go get some chow. A lot. Learn to cook, use the food matrix.
3-Go to bed early. In a dark room. Repeat daily.
4-Get some exercise. I do not care what kind. Make sure it is appropriate for your fitness level. I personally like lifting weights, but I’m just kind of a meat head. Do what you like.
5-Do this for 30 days. Change takes time. Patterns establish with repetition. Most psychology gurus say we need to do something for 21 days to affect change. Fine, we’ll go 30.
6-Track progress. I describe how to do it in the book, I provided a reminder here. If you ask me about your weight, we are going to have a hell of a problem!
7-Report your experience."

Is This Paleo?? This APP for your Phone Will Tell You!!

"
"Standing in the grocery store holding a bottle of coconut aminos and wondering, “Is this paleo”?  Out to coffee with friends looking at the menu contemplating an iced Americano or a Green Tea Latte and thinking, “Which of these are Paleo?”  Green beans, V8, ketchup, almond flour, cashews, bologna…  Are they Paleo?  So many questions, but who can you ask and how can you be sure the answer you get is valid?  Well, you are in luck because now – “There’s an app for that!” It is called "ONLY PALEO".

I just checked it out on my iPhone and there it was.

Robb Wolf's Website Says "NO to Protein Powder"!!

PROTEIN POWDER AFTER A WORKOUT IS NOT THE BEST CHOICE!!
Protein Powder
  • Now granted in some situations – few and rare – a protein powder and/or liquid meal may have a place; but for the general population that’s Crossfitting, going jogging, lifting weights, etc these magic powders are not all they’re ‘shook’ up to be and in every case REAL FOOD is always the BEST choice!
  •   Protein powders fall under the realm of ‘supplements’ in the eyes of the government and therefore are not regulated nor checked for purity or content.
  •   Believe it or not protein powders are a processed food.  Yes, you heard that correctly – these powders are far from a ‘natural phenomenon’.
  •  The primary purpose of post pain party fuel is to restore the muscle protein and glycogen that was depleted during the workout and to promote recovery.  If getting/staying lean and enhancing health and longevity are also on your list of ‘things to do’ – then liquid food will not the best choice make.

"This is a story about a guy I know – we’ll call him ‘Magnus’ (he’d like that).  He likes to lift heavy things and has been known to grunt and swear while lifting these heavy things.  When he opens his (massive) gym bag it’s like taking a trip to GNC (if GNC also sold chalk) – there’s the pre-workout drink mix, the during workout potion, the protein packed post-workout magic muscle builder, a plethora of other random pills/powders and the mandatory ‘shaker bottle’.  Let’s just say ‘Magnus’ is VIP at GNC.  Now, I’m guessing you all have a picture of ‘Magnus’ in your head right now and maybe he looks a little like the dude on the cover of this month’s Muscle & Fiction Magazine…  Well, I hate to break it to you but ‘Magnus’ stands about 5’11” and likely tips the scale at a solid 160 (after lunch).  Yeah, downright burly – or something…
Alright, so my guess is you all know at least one ‘Magnus’ and even if you aren’t “that guy or gal” there is a pretty good chance you too own a ‘shaker bottle’ and massive tub of some type of protein powder.  Why am I assuming this?  One of the MOST common questions I get and see goes something like this, “What’s a good Paleo protein powder?” or  “What protein powder do you recommend?”  Well folks, here I am, once again ‘raining on your parade’.  Now granted in some situations – few and rare – a protein powder and/or liquid meal may have a place; but for the general population that’s Crossfitting, going jogging, lifting weights, etc these magic powders are not all they’re ‘shook’ up to be and in every case REAL FOOD is always the BEST choice!
Now you’re all thinking, but they sell it at my gym and everyone else says it’s good and it works for muscle building, fat loss, leaning out, recovery, energy, weight gain, insert your goal here___________.  That right there should be your first clue – one powder/shake that fits everyone’s goals – how does that work?  Sure, there are ‘lite’ and ‘mega-growth’ formulas – but when it comes down to the stick – they all ‘shake’ out about the same.  One may use a sugar substitute instead of sugar or have a different amino acid breakdown, but in truth you can’t trust what the label says anyway…
Supplement ‘Facts’
Let’s look at the label – sure it says it has 20 grams of protein, all the essential amino acids, is 100% ‘pure’ – blah, blah, blah…  Unfortunately, what you think you’re getting and what you’re actually getting can be two very different things.  Protein powders fall under the realm of ‘supplements’ in the eyes of the government and therefore are not regulated nor checked for purity or content.  A Consumer Reports investigation uncovered concerning amounts of arsenic, lead, mercury and cadmium  in several well known and darn right popular protein powders – we’re talking ‘exceeding maximum’ pharmacologically deemed ‘safe’ numbers here.  And do you really know what else could be in there?  There have been several cases and reports of seemingly innocent ‘protein powders’ being contaminated with anabolic steroids or like substances which have resulted in positive ‘doping’ test results.
Have you ever went to the meat counter and asked the butcher to cut you off a big slab of whey or cracked open an egg to be greeted with a white powder?  I’m guessing it’s a great big negatory on that one.  Believe it or not protein powders are a processed food.  Yes, you heard that correctly – these powders are far from a ‘natural phenomenon’.  You cannot milk a cow and get a powder, city kids you’re just going to have to trust me on this one.  So, where does the powder come from?  In the case of whey, it’s often a waste product of cheese making and unless you’re getting the super pricey, meat is a better deal, protein powder from grassfed animals you’re likely getting ‘grain-fed waste’.  Let’s also consider the process that makes the whey into a powder (it’s liquid in real life…) – this process be it whey or egg white often utilizes extremely high heat (like higher than cooking).  This ‘hot air’ denatures the protein to an extent that may increase its carcinogenic load.  And hold on, there’s more!!  Some of these powders even come with some bonus MSG!!  Remember that rule about food that comes in a package, needs a label and can live on a shelf for an extended period of time?  Apply that here.
But I Need A Post Workout Meal?!?!
Relax!!  Yes, the post workout meal is important but consider the goal of that meal along with your overall goals.  The primary purpose of post pain party fuel is to restore the muscle protein and glycogen that was depleted during the workout and to promote recovery.  If getting/staying lean and enhancing health and longevity are also on your list of ‘things to do’ – then liquid food will not the best choice make.  Why?  Two-words: Insulin Response.  Granted after you workout your insulin sensitivity is heightened and it takes less of it to clear the post workout meal glucose from the blood; but this phenomenon should be taken advantage of not hindered by a liquid induced blood sugar surge.  Liquids require less processing and digestion, so instead of the slow steady blood sugar rise that happens with a dose of starchy carb and some protein from real food sources; the ‘shaker bottle’ cocktail results in a zero to 60 increase in blood glucose levels.  This pedal to the metal rise requires insulin fast and even though sensitivity is heightened the end result is more insulin being produced to clear the sugar bombarded blood.  This folks – is NOT what we’re going for!  If you find this whole post workout eating thing a whole lot of confusing definitely check out Robb’s post about the ins and outs of the game.  But understand that you can’t do better than ‘real food’ regardless of what your friends or the label on a tub of powder say.
So, what’s a ‘Magnus’ to do??  Put the shaker bottle away and stop paying for the college educations of the “I work on commission” GNC salespersons kids and “JUST CHEW IT”!  Your body, taste buds and wallet will be MUCH happier in the end.
What are you ‘whey’ting for?"

A Little Paleo Diet Controversy

Below please find an article that was published in the US News and World publication recently. Needless to say, it wasn't the most flattering review of the "diet".

Then read Robb Wolf's rebuttal article posted on his web site.

Interesting points on both sides although Rob has a LOT more factual evidence to back his points up.
Just a little "food for thought".
