"GRAIN BRAIN"--"CAN THE PALEO DIET HEAL MENTAL DISORDERS?"

Gluten's affect on the human brain

GRAIN BRAIN-an interesting book that is based largely on the Paleo diet with allowances for some dairy and some gluten free grains.

In an article, titled "CAN THE PALEO DIET HEAL MENTAL DISORDERS" written by Kimberly Leonard in US News.com, she summarized some of the main hypothesis in Dr.Perlmutter's book.

*" that grains cause degenerative brain disorders, including dementia and Alzheimer's disease, and play a role in attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, epilepsy, anxiety, migraines and depression. Gluten, which is a "glue" that holds flour together, is the main culprit of obesity and why people suffer from brain diseases,..."

*" The bread products of our ancestors also had lower levels of gluten than today's processed foods. When your body encounters gluten your blood sugar spikes, causing inflammation and severe harm to your brain, he says...."

*"The idea that people are nutritionally deprived because they don't eat grain has no scientific basis," he says, adding that the nutritional value of grain products is nothing more than a marketing ploy....."

*" people need to be selective and eat only the meat of animals that have been grass fed. Most cattle are fed genetically modified grain, not their natural diet of grass, which he says is high in fatty acid and provides what the brain needs for optimum health. The brain contains 60 to 70 percent fat, Perlmutter says. Therefore, the more fat and cholesterol you eat, he explains, the healthier your brain will be....."

* Spend 20 minutes a day walking, jogging, using the elliptical or biking.
Exercise stimulates the growth of new brain cells, Perlmutter says. "There's no prescription that can do this," he says. "All you have to do is exercise...."

* Perlmutter lists seven "Super Supplements" he says nourish the brain. They include: DHA, an omega-3 fatty acid; resveratrol, a supplement that slows aging; turmeric, a supplement that improves glucose metabolism; probiotics, which fight bacteria; alpha-lipoic acid, an antioxidant; and coconut oil and vitamin D.

*"And don't forget to sleep, which allows the brain to heal itself on a daily basis...."

"Why I DON’T Eat a Paleo Diet…But Close"

Why I DON’T Eat a Paleo Diet…But Close

ORIGINALLY PRINTED AT THE WEBSITE:   http://www.draxe.com/why-i-dont-eat-a-paleo-diet-but-close/

The Paleo (Paleolithic) diet is one of the most popular diet’s in America today.  The Paleo Diet, also known as the cave-man diet or hunter gatherer diet is based on the idea that before modern agriculture (Paleolithic era 2.5 million years ago to 10,000 B.C.) the human body evolved and adapted to eating a diet consisting of wild plants and animals.
Many Crossfit athletes are now following the paleo diet to get stronger, leaner, faster, and improve recovery time.
I recently did a radio interview with my friend Mark Sisson who is one of the leading experts on the Paleo Diet and runs a company called Primal Nutrition. While I don’t believe in many of the evolutionary theories of paleo, I do think that our bodies adhere better to a diet high in vegetables, fruits, nuts, seeds, and wild meats which fall into the hunter gatherer lifestyle.
Here I want to discuss the Good and Bad about the paleo diet…
First, What Are Paleo Foods?
The paleo diet consists of foods that can be hunted or fished like meat, organ meat and seafood and foods that can be gathered like eggs, fruits, vegetables, mushrooms, nuts, seeds, herbs, and spices.
Foods that are not on the paleo diet are anything processed, grains, legumes (beans and peanuts), raw dairy, salt, and oils.
Raw Dairy is considered by some experts to be paleo while others believe it doesn’t make the list.  A paleo diet with dairy added in is called a Neo-Paleo diet.
The Good and Bad of the Paleo Diet
I believe there are 3 major positive aspects of the paleo diet.
1. Nothing Processed – One of the major upsides of the paleo diet is that it rescripts ALL processed foods and recommends mostly raw foods.  In America today 80+% of the foods we eat are highly processed genetically modified foods.  So any diet that recommends you eat foods in their natural state is a positive.
2. Wild Caught Meat – A paleo diet is high in Omega-3 fatty acids and lower in Omega-6 fatty acids.  According to paleo experts 60% of food energy should come from animal foods like wild caught fish, bison, deer, turkey, and eggs.  All of these foods are high in omega-3 fatty acids in which the Standard American Diet is greatly deficient.  Omega-3 fats can reduce inflammation, improve neurological function, aid in digestion, improve focus, and restore healthy skin just to name a few.
3. Raw Fruits, Vegetables, Nuts and Seeds – A paleo diet recommends 40% of food energy come from Raw nutrient dense foods.  As the saying goes in American, we are overfed, but undernourished.  So consuming larger amounts of nutrient dense foods like vegetables is far superior to a diet primarily consisting of low nutrient grains.
I also follow a diet of minimal grains and when I do consume grains on occasion those grains have been sprouted.  By not eating grains you are also eliminating gluten in which many american’s have developed sensitivities to.
Why I DON’T Eat Paleo
The foundational reason I don’t follow the paleo diet is because it stems from a belief system based on macroevolution, while I personally am a creationist. Also, the Paleo diet eliminates Raw cultured dairy like Yogurt, Kefir, and Amasai which I believe to be one of the healthiest foods in the world if done right.
In addition, here are some foods that I don’t consume but are recommended on the Paleo Diet:
  • Alligator
  • Catfish
  • Ostrich
  • Pork
  • Shellfish
  • Snakes
If you’ve read my article on Pork you will known that some of these animals are common carriers of parasites and are bottom feeders like shellfish and catfish.
The Healing Foods Diet
So what eating plan or diet should you follow?  I recommend eating “healing foods”.  Foods that both follow a hunter-gatherer like lifestyle but also follow science and kosher/biblical eating principles.  These foods are nutrient dense and free of toxins.
Healing Foods include:
  • Vegetables
  • Herbs
  • Fruits
  • Nuts (sprouted)
  • Seeds (sprouted)
  • Organic Grass-fed Meat and Wild Game
  • Free-range Poultry and Eggs
  • Wild Caught Fish
  • Pastured Raw Dairy

Eating Paleo 80%?????

evolutionThis is a great article espousing the benefits of the Paleo diet
but also explaining why the author does not follow it 100%.

"Personally, I am grateful for the popularization of the paleo lifestyle as it has brought to our attention that the food pyramid is wrong. Yes, it was created by the agricultural industry with simply their own interest in mind. "

"Here are some of the facts that the paleo lifestyle has helped support, and as a result, bust the top food myths of the last five decades "
1. There is in fact no requirement for wholegrains, when fibre can be found in higher quantities in    fruit and vegetables
2.  Pasteurised cow’s milk is devoid of nutrients as they are destroyed by the heat treatment
3.  Saturated fat does not cause heart disease
4.  Low cholesterol is not an indication of health
5.  Eggs do not cause heart disease
***This portion of the blog post gives you links to articles which support her hypothesizes.

The article goes on to explain which items she eats which are NOT considered paleo such as feta cheese, chickpeas and rice malt syrup.

The author makes great points and it is worth a read for those who are struggling keeping to a STRICT Paleo lifestyle.

Is Eating Healthy An Obsession With You?

I found this article today and it explains , in a roundabout way, why eating Paleo can be a bit compulsive but generally it is just an attempt to eat foods that make you feel better and healthier.

Comments have been made such as, "  ‘people who are completely Paleo are too rigid‘ to ‘anyone who never eats grain, dairy or legumes must clearly suffer from orthorexia and it’s a real problem‘."
(orthorexia= Those who have an “unhealthy obsession” with otherwise healthy eating)

The article retorts with:
"....Understood…and agreed, even, but we have to separate the scenario where someone has an actual eating disorder and someone does not, but has simply identified certain foods as making them feel ill and consequently avoiding those.   It’s unfair and inaccurate to group the two together."

Personally, I try to avoid certain foods that make me feel sick to my stomach or uncomfortable. I am not trying to be compulsive or too "rigid" in my eating habits, I have just found that eating a "cleaner" diet solves a lot of my digestive issues. That said, when cake is involved, I am the first one in line. Some digestive upsets are just worth it!

Beginner’s Guide to the Paleo Diet

"The Paleo diet has been reported to eliminate bloating, clear up acne, eradicate seasonal allergies, free you from migraines, and even help you shed a few pounds. While none of this is guaranteed, cleaning up your diet and focusing on whole, fresh foods is definitely a good idea. “Real foods in the right portions help you feel more satisfied because they help keep blood sugar levels even and your hunger hormones balanced,” says Diane Sanfilippo, a holistic nutritionist and author of Practical Paleo.
The basic guidelines—skip grains (both refined and whole), legumes, packaged snacks, dairy, and sugar in favor of vegetables, fruit, meat, seafood, eggs, nuts, seeds, fats, and oils—seem easy, but to successfully go cavewoman takes some savvy. Follow these 11 rules to get started."

"Paleo Diet: How do I convince someone to try it?"

Another great post from Robb Wolf !!
It served as a good reminder to me that only some people will be willing to listen to how I eat and how much better I have felt due to the changes I have made in my diet. All you can do is give your friends and loved ones suggestions and serve as a good example, you cannot make someone change. (even if it is better for them)
The Paleo Solution and 30 Day Total Transformation
Robb Wolf-Paleo Diet

Some excerpts:

"…I love helping people, I want desperately to get this information out to folks and see them thrive and live a long, productive life. But I will not waste my time on someone unwilling to change. That one person, that one roadblock…the know-it-all who prefers sickness to change is wasting my time and that means the person who WOULD change may not get the message in time.

And let’s be crystal-f..king-clear about the onerous task I am asking of folks to save their own skins:

Try it.
For 30 days.
Tell me what happened.
That’s it. 30 days, and we will know if it “Did or did Not.”

SOME KEYS TO SUCCESSFULLY TRANSITIONING TO A MORE PALEO LIFESTYLE

"7 Steps to Success"

"The program that I laid out in my book is pretty solid and it was born of observing people both succeed and fail in the attempt to change their lives. Here are the broad brush-strokes of what you need to do to change:
1-Clean out the entire house. All the crap get’s bagged up and donated to charity. The crap you are trying to justify saving for the kids will undermine your efforts, follow the program.
2-Go shopping. Use my shopping and food guide and go get some chow. A lot. Learn to cook, use the food matrix.
3-Go to bed early. In a dark room. Repeat daily.
4-Get some exercise. I do not care what kind. Make sure it is appropriate for your fitness level. I personally like lifting weights, but I’m just kind of a meat head. Do what you like.
5-Do this for 30 days. Change takes time. Patterns establish with repetition. Most psychology gurus say we need to do something for 21 days to affect change. Fine, we’ll go 30.
6-Track progress. I describe how to do it in the book, I provided a reminder here. If you ask me about your weight, we are going to have a hell of a problem!
7-Report your experience."

How To Eat Paleo on a Budget

The lurong Paleo Challenge starts this week. For a lot of the participants it is time to start shopping with a Paleo Diet in mind. Interestingly enough I was talking to a spouse of a Challenge Participant and they were complaining that,
"eating Paleo was costing her family a lot of extra money".

I came upon this article from BalancedBites.Com which had quite a few cost cutting suggestions.  A few examples are:

*Buy locally and in-season

* Buy in bulk when items are on sale.

* Cook in bulk so that what you buy in bulk is not wasted

* Find a local pasture-raised animal farmer, become his/her friend, and go in on meat shares with friends and neighbors

  *Buy and prepare organ meats.

* Make bone broth.

*and many more suggestions, some of which I find helpful and others not so much.

"Paleolithic diets have become all the rage, but they are getting our ancestral diet all wrong. "

Image 2. A Black and White Colobus Monkey eating leaves. Photo by Alain Houle. Another very interesting perspective on the Paleo Diet!
From Scientific American:

  • "Paleolithic diets, caveman diets, primal diets and the like, urge us to eat like the ancients. Taken too literally, such diets are ridiculous. After all, sometimes our ancestors starved to death and the starving to death diet, well, it ends badly.
  •  Although “Paleolithic” diets in diet books tend to be very meaty, reasonable minds disagree as to whether ancient, Paleolithic diets actually were. Fortunately, new research suggests a clear answer to the question of what our ancestors ate.
  • But if we want to return to the diet our guts and bodies evolved to deal with, we should not be looking at our most recent ancestors. Instead, we need to understand the diet of our ancestors during the time when the main features of our guts, and their magical abilities to turn food into life, evolved. We need, in other words, to look at apes, monkeys and other non-human primates.
  • The majority of the food consumed by primates today–and every indication is for the last thirty million years–is vegetable, not animal. Plants are what our apey and even earlier ancestors ate; they were our paleo diet for most of the last thirty million years during which our bodies, and our guts in particular, were evolving. In other words, there is very little evidence that our guts are terribly special and the job of a generalist primate gut is to eat plants. We have special immune systems, special brains, even special hands, but our guts are ordinary and for tens of millions of years those ordinary guts have tended to be filled with fruit, leaves, and the occasional delicacy of a raw hummingbird4.
  • A paleo diet is an arbitrary thing. Which paleo diet should we eat? The one from twelve thousand years ago? A hundred thousand years ago? Forty million years ago?"

A GREAT IDEA!! A PALEO-FRIENDLY FOOD CART!!!

This is an incredible idea. Would it work in this area?

Cultured Caveman

"The West Coast’s first 100% Paleo-friendly food cart is set to debut on NE Alberta on May 31st, and we’ve got the story behind the gourmet offerings without gluten, dairy, added sugar, soy, legumes, or conventionally processed food.
Joe Ban and Heather Hunter had been bandying the idea of opening a coffee shop for ages, but as recently as three weeks ago they were happy with their day jobs and content to pursue their food business in their imaginations.
Content, that is, until a late-night conversation about the potential of putting the shop idea on wheels sparked a Kickstarter Campaign that launch the plan into the fast lane.
Within days of posting their video explaining what it would take to launch Portland’s first Paleo food cart, the couple and business partners had enough donated cash to commission a locally-designed custom mobile kitchen outfitted to serve gourmet dishes without gluten, dairy, added sugar, soy, legumes, or conventionally processed food of any sort.
Though Ban and Hunter are still shell shocked by the generosity of the Portland and national Paleo community, they’re ready to return the high-protein favor.
The Food: High-protein, low-carb grub for everyone. The initial menu will include Egg Frittata Muffins made with organic coconut flour and omega-3 eggs with either kale and bacon or vegetarian with wild mushroom and red pepper; Locally-sourced, grass-fed beef cheeks with jicama slaw served as a nori hand roll; and Paleo fried chicken drumsticks coated in almond flour and a blend of Colonel-inspired spices. In addition, the cart will dish up kale chips, sweet potato fries fried in grass-fed beef tallow, and high-protein smoothies with Ban’s own protein blend.
The Drink: The dream started as a coffee shop, so locally-roasted beans will play a starring role in the cart. The team will be sourcing beans from Paleo enthusiast Jordy Isaac of One Drop Roasting, based in Clackamas. In addition to local kombucha and yerba mate, the team plans to apply for a liquor license in a few months to serve sake and wine.
The Cart: Designed and built by the custom cart experts at Independent Mobile Kitchens and hand-painted by local muralist Gary Herd, the cart will be a modern marvel of locally-produced ©artwork. Ban is 6 foot 3, so Cultured Caveman is designed for his height in mind, with a raised ceiling, higher counter tops, and some high tech equipment like a pressure roaster for perfect fried chicken.
The Location: The cart will perch pretty in a new pod on NE Alberta and 15th. Originally, the pod was designed to house exclusively Asian street food, but the Caveman team approached the developer and successfully pitched their inclusion. Ban now proudly promotes the pod as “Asian food with a twist—and we’re the twist”. The pod will feature heated and covered seating, mobile restrooms and handwashing stations, and projected Blazers games and movies.
The Opening: The cart is set to debut on May 31st, the kick-off of Alberta’s Last Thursday street fair. Stay tuned for photos and first bites, here on Eat Beat!"
